El año pasado Theresa Becker Wayman juntó con Emily Kokal (su compañera en Warpaint) fue nombrada una de las mejores guitarristas de música alternativa del mundo, y este #girlpower que irradia esta chica, no solamente al tocar su Fender Mustang, si no también al componer y cantar, lo podemos seguir admirando con el resultado de su proyecto como solista titulado “LoveLaws“ que lanzó hace algunos meses, pero el cual estuvo preparando desde hace siete años hasta que tuvo las piezas suficientes para sacar este álbum.Hace una semana contamos con el honor de tener a T.T. como parte del jurado en la final de Vans Sessions y platicamos nuevamente con ella para no solo hablar del romanticismo que este nuevo proyecto como solista manifiesta en cada una de sus canciones, si no también para que nos compartiera los mejores tips que le puede dar a aquellos jóvenes que quieren sobresalir en la industria musical.

Mientras se escuchaba de fondo el soundcheck de las bandas que se iban a rifar sobre el escenario por la noche de aquel sábado 21 de julio en la final de Vans Sessions, Theresa llegó a la terraza del Foro Indie Rocks con las mejores vibes, un body de Vans que hacía match con sus Vans Old Skool de colores retro muy cool y una gran inspiración para tener una laaaarga charla con nosotros mientras intervenía un par de Vans Authentic.

Más allá de platicarnos que si no fuera músico estaría probablemente aún trabajando en la tienda de chocolates que tenía junto a su hermana,  nos compartió que para sobresalir en este mundo musical si es lo que realmente quieres debes tomarte todo esto seriamente, tienes que hacerlo con el corazón, practicar una y mil veces, ya que finalmente todo el tiempo que inviertes se ve reflejado. Nunca debes decir “no” o “no puedo”, ya que es algo puede tomar tiempo, pero nadie puede decirte que no lo vas a lograr. Es cuestión de creértela y de encontrar esa pasión que te motive a querer sobresalir siendo autentico para que lo vean los demás.

Since 66: La última vez que charlamos tu canción “Love Leaks” apenas había salido. Este enfoque de lanzar un proyecto como solista y adentrarte dentro del negocio de la música con tu propio sello debió de haber traído muchos retos y grandes satisfacciones, ¿podrías decirnos algunos de estos? Danos un update de lo que ha pasado…

T.T.: Me fui de gira por Inglaterra con otra banda y sentí como si tocara por primera vez nuevamente. Estaba tan nerviosa antes de cada show porque no sabia que era lo que iba a pasar. Desde hace mucho que no tenia ese sentimiento con Warpaint. Fue bastante reconfortante. 

En general, amo tocar en vivo, amo tocar con Warpaint, pero definitivamente es otra cosa cuando lo haces con tu propio proyecto, se siente como si todo saliera de ti, te sientes tan alineado contigo mismo y se siente increíble eso. 

Since 66: ¿Qué fue lo que te inspiró para hacer este EP? ¿Qué canción, libro, artista o lugar?

T.T.: De hecho, estaba viendo mucho cine clásico de los 40`s. Hay cierta sensualidad y sexualidad en el cine antiguo que termina siendo “romántico” y a veces eso se llega a perder, pero de alguna manera siento que este album se siente así, se siente “romántico”. 

Since 66: ¿Qué estas escuchando actualmente? ¿Qué nos recomendarías? 

T.T.: He estado escuchando mucho a Karen Dalton. Nunca la había escuchado, pero encontré uno de sus álbumes en mi colección, que creo que de alguna manera lo adquirí sin saber quién era, pero lo pusé y ahora no puedo dejar de escucharlo.

Since 66: Tú y Emily fueron nombradas las mejores guitarristas alternativas en el mundo el año pasado. ¿Qué dirías que caracteriza tu estilo? ¿Te importan ese tipo de elogios?¿Encuentras significativo que finalmente ese tipo de reconocimientos están siendo presentados para las mujeres?

T.T.: Creo que todo esta siendo cada vez más enfocado a la igualdad hoy en día en todos los niveles. Fue muy agradable ser considerada como una buena guitarrista. Diría que lo que me caracteriza es que en realidad nunca aprendí algo de manera real. Creo que necesitas crear algo único sin tener que seguir las reglas tradicionales. Para mi, eso es lo que te podría caracterizar.

Estando en Warpaint, ya que todas en la banda tocan partes muy difíciles y todas tocan tan diferente tanto que siempre termina siendo una “conversación musical” de la cual necesitas hacerte escuchar, me ayudó a encontrar mi rango más alto para formar parte de esa conversación. Era una necesidad para encontrar un espacio en cualquier canción con Warpaint.

Since 66: También eres conocida por usar la fender mustang, que para nosotros es probablemente una de las guitarras más cool (que personas tan increíbles como: Kurt, Bilinda Butcher, David Byrne, Liz Pharr, Thurston Moore y King Krule han tocado o tocan), ¿Qué la hace tan especial para ti?

T.T.: Simplemente me gusta como suena. Me gusta como se siente. Se ha convertido en una guitarra bastante cómoda para mi. Intenté tocar otras guitarras, pero no se siente igual para mi. Esta realmente funciona conmigo.

Since 66: ¿Desde cuando supiste que querías tocar o que ser músico era “your thing”? ¿Había alguna otra alternativa? 

T.T.: Me dí cuenta probablemente en el 2010 que tan importante era hacer música para mi, pero jamas creí que tanto significaría para mi a un nivel emocional y de curación. Antes de eso tenía una compañia de chocolate con mi hermana y también estaba trabajando con mi novio de aquel tiempo en el diseño de patrones y diseños para su linea de ropa. De hecho, creo que hubiera sido muy feliz de haber sido pintora de no haber sido músico.

Me considero una persona muy emocional y creo que la música es un tipo de “curación emocional” . Escribir y hacer “Love Laws” me ayudaron bastante a entender muchas cosas de mi misma y de cambiarlas.   

Since 66: Si pudieras elegir solo una cosa que elegirías: ¿Componer, cantar o tocar la guitarra?

T.T.: Diría que cantar. Simplemente porque es una de las cosas más satisfactorias, ya que sale de tu cuerpo y automáticamente cura y se siente bien.

Since 66: ¿Por qué “Love Laws“? ¿Qué significa para ti?

T.T.: Siento que de alguna manera estaba siendo un poco dura con el amor y el romance. Estaba tratando de entender eso en mi vida, porque sentía que eso no estaba funcionando y no sabía cómo encajar tales cosas en mi vida. Sentía que solo estaba controlando las cosas, así que solo quería entender eso y luego me di cuenta de que hay algunas armonías al cantar sobre el amor que afectan la manera en la que estás en tus relaciones amorosas.Entonces comencé a sentir que el amor es la única ley que controla todo y que es fundamental en la vida.

Since 66: En un mundo como este, donde las relaciones son tan complicadas hoy en día, ¿Cómo nos podríamos relacionar o sentir identificados con cada una de las canciones de “LoveLaws“?

T.T.: Hay algunas canciones sobre cómo ser responsables el uno con el otro, de como recordar que se ama al otro, y de como no nos deberíamos de alejar del otro en un momento en que alguien podría estar en un aspecto inferior de sí mismo. Además, la importancia del amor propio, donde a veces, hacer primero lo que debes hacer por ti mismo es la única forma en que puedes estar allí para otra persona.

Since 66: ¿Qué historia hay detras de “I’ve been fine”?

T.T.: Esa es una canción de ruptura. Sobre una mala relación que termina. Una gran cantidad de escritores cuando escriben este tipo de cosas ni siquiera piensan en ello, simplemente les salen todas esas palabras.

Since 66:  ¿Qué fue primero para este album: las letras o la música?

T.T.: Generalmente, la música.

Since 66: ¿Cuál fue la parte más difícil de hacer música sola para Theresa Wayman?

T.T.: Probablemente terminarla, no saber cuando estaría lista y tratar de lidiar con mi mente esquizofrénica cada que la escuchaba.

Since 66: ¿Cuánto te llevo producir y hacer “LoveLaws”?

T.T.: Probablemente las haya comenzado hace años, exactamente unos 7 años. Pero solo las comencé. He estado aprendiendo cómo grabarme en la computadora, a hacer ritmos y a hacer el sonido que quería. Pero hasta hace 2 años, me di cuenta que tenía suficientes piezas para hacer un álbum, así que mi hermano y yo lo coprodujimos juntos. De hecho, el toca la batería en algunas canciones de este album.

Since 66: Last time we met your song “Love Leaks” had just come out. This solo foray into releasing music and music business , since you have your own label, must have presented new challenges and great satisfactions, could you tell us a bit about those? Give us an update of sorts…

T.T.: I went into a small supporting tour in UK for another band, and it felt like the first time I was about to play. I was so nervous before my first show because I didn’t knew what was going about to happen, I  haven´t had that feeling with Warpaint for a long time. It was very refreshing. 

I love playing live in general, I love play with Warpaint, but it´s definitely  something else when you do your own project, like if all comes from you, you feel so aligned with it, and that feels great.

Since 66: What inspired you to make this whole EP; which movie, book, artist, place?

T.T.: I was actually watching a lot of all 40´s classic cinema. There is a sensuality and sexuality in old cinema that´s turns is “romantic”, and sometimes that just get lost in the way, but somehow i kind of feel that feels like this album, feels “romantic”.

Since 66: What are you currently listening to? What could you recommend us?

T.T.: I´ve listening to Karen Dalton a lot. I´ve never really discover her, but i found one of her records in my record collection and i think somehow I acquired without knowing what it was and I put it on and can’t stop listening. 

Since 66: You and Emily were named best alternative guitarists in the world last year. What would you say characterizes your style? Do that type of accolade interests you? Do you find it meaningful that finally those sort of awards are finally being presented to women?

T.T.: I think everything is been pushed to more and more equality in these days on all levels. It was really nice to be thought as a good guitarist, and I would say what characterizes me is that I actually never learn anything like in a real way. I think you need to create something more unique without following the traditional rules. For me, it is what might characterizes you.

Being in Warpaint, as everybody in the band plays really busy parts, everyone plays different, so there´s a lot of talking going on in a way, so I always find myself going up the neck to find the high range. It was a necessity to like find a space in any song with Warpaint.

Since 66: Also, you are known for using the fender mustang, to us it’s probably one of the collest looking guitars (and the coolest people use it or had use it as: Kurt, Bilinda Butcher, David Byrne, Liz Phair, Thurston Moore, and King Krule ), what makes it so special to you?

T.T.: I just like the way that it plays. I like the way that it feels. It has become very comfortable for me. I tried played other guitars, but they don’t feel like the same for me. This really works for me. 

Since 66: Since when did you knew that you wanted to play? Or that being a musician was “your thing”? There were any other options beside?

T.T.: I realized probably in 2010 how much making music really mean to me, but i never though how much would mean to me in a emotional/healing level. Before that I had a chocolate company with my sister, and i was also working with my boyfriend by the time in the creation of patterns and designs for his clothing line. And actually, I think I would be happy being a painter if i wasn’t a musician.

I consider myself a very emotional person and i think that music is such and emotional healing. Like, writing and making “Love Laws”, really helped me to understand many different things about myself, and made me change them. 

Since 66: If you could choose doing just one thing, which one would it be: compose, sing or play the guitar?

T.T.: I would say sing. Just because that is one of the most directly satisfying things, cause it just comes out from you body and automatically heals, and feels great.

Since 66: Why “LoveLaws”? What does it means for you?

T.T.: I feel that in a way I was being kind of rude with love and romance, and I was trying to understand that in my life, because I kind of feel that that wasn’t working and didn’t know how to fit that in my life. I was feeling like that i was just controlling things, so I just wanted to understand that, and then through that i realized that there are some harmonies from singing about love, and those affect how you are in your romantic relationships. So it started feeling like love is the only law that controls everything and is fundamental in life.

Since 66: In a world like this, where relationships are so complicated right now… how could we be related or identified with each song from “LoveLaws“?

T.T.:  There are some songs about being responsable to each other, and kind of remembering that we love each other, and not being cut off in a moment when someone might be in a lower aspect of himself. Also, the importance of self love, and sometimes doing what you need to do for yourself is the only way you can ever be there for somebody else.

Since 66: What story is behind “I’ve been fine”?

T.T.: That´s a break up song. About a bad relationship ending. A lot of writers when they write these kind of stuff, not even think about it, it just came out with all the words behind.

Since 66: What come first for this album; the lyrics or the music?

T.T.: Generally, the music. 

Since 66: Which was the hardest part of making music for Theresa Wayman?

T.T.: Probably just finishing it, not knowing when it would be done, and dealing with my personal trips of arrange it everytime i hear it.

Since 66: How long did you take producing and making “LoveLaws” ?

T.T.: Probably I have start them years and years ago, around 7 years ago. But just started them. I have been learning how to record myself in the computer, making beats, and make the sound I want. And then 2 years ago I realized I got enough pieces to make and album, so me and my brother co-produced it together. He actually plays the drums in some songs.
